From the Co-Headteachers

This is our last weekly newsletter as we head off to the summer break.

We wish to send our thanks to, first, all students for their hard work over the past academic year as well as, second, all parents/carers for all their support and feedback about our incredible school. A huge number of messages and comments have been received and we thank you for your warmth and genuinely honest feedback.

We are also exceptionally proud and privileged to lead Isleworth & Syon School. It is a wonderful, dynamic and fast-moving environment. We benefit from being in a fantastic London location and take advantage of excellent partnerships, both locally and further afield. The school is also very fortunate to have an outstanding board of trustees who have are very much invested and interested in the school.

As the school heads towards 400 years of high-quality education and outstanding opportunities for local boys, we continue to celebrate all forms of achievement in school.

Year 11 and Year 13 students are awaiting their examination results. We shall see you in August on the results days; we very much look forward to celebrating your successes as you prepare for your next step.

This newsletter – The Isleworthian – will return in the Autumn Term. Please do give us some feedback. In the meantime, we wish all our families all the very best for the future and we do hope that you have a good summer.

Top Extra-Curricular Performers

All year, we have used this space in the newsletter to highlight a ‘Club of the Week’. In truth, it has been difficult to select just one each week – such is the breadth of outstanding opportunities on offer at this school. Indeed, we know that nearly 500 students have taken part in at least one club during this term. That’s not far off 50% of the whole school!

There are some students who have particularly excelled – whose commitment to extra-curricular opportunities this term has gone above and beyond. Below you will find a list of the top 20 in the school for this term, who have attended an incredible 151 clubs between them! The top 20 ranking is as follows:

Word of the Week

The word of the week is orient.

Safeguarding

In the run-up to summer, we work closely with parents/carers and multi-agency services to ensure that all our students are protected. We teach all of our students to keep themselves safe both in and out school, in person, and when they are on the internet.

Our Personal Development (PD) and Relationships & Sex Education (RSE) curriculum encourages and supports students to become more independent and self-disciplined. They also learn about:

  • their own wellbeing
  • relationships and sex education
  • drug education
  • online safety
  • fundamental British Values such as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

As a happy, safe and tolerant school community we ensure all students, staff, parents / carers and visitors are treated with dignity and respect.

During the holidays, if you have a concern about the safety or welfare of your child, please email the safeguarding team at safeguarding@isleworthsyon.org. A member of staff will be monitoring the account. If there is an emergency call 999 or, for non-urgent matters that require police attention, call 101.

News

Barcelona

As part of Wider Learning Week last year, a group of students took part in an incredible residential trip to Barcelona.

The first challenge was a very early meet, with students expected at Heathrow Airport at 6.15am! Spirits were high though as students got on the plane for the short flight to Barcelona. The trip was a fantastic opportunity for our GCSE Spanish students to practice their language skills in real life situations. As part of this process, students consolidated their knowledge with some language lessons. Particular highlights of the trip were the visit to the Camp Nou football stadium, home to FC Barcelona, as well as a guided tour of the Sagrada Familia. Students also took in the Parc Güell, La Boquería Market and a few local restaurants too!

This truly was a special experience, with students able to hone their language skills in practical settings. Students also experienced a slice of Spanish culture throughout!

DofE Gold

Well done to the 12 Year 12 students who have returned from the Lake District today after completing their practice expedition as part of their Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award. The four-day venture included some serious walking around Ullswater, the opportunity to develop camp craft and even the chance for a wild camp, all of course whilst coping with the changing weather. Do check out the tweets from the expedition! The students now look forward to their assessed expedition in the autumn.

Work Experience

For the last two weeks, we have been delighted that over 60% of Year 10 students have been taking part in Work Experience. The after-effects of Covid means it continues to be difficult to find placements!

Work experience is a crucial part of our offer as it has been proven to be a valuable motivational tool in helping to raise academic standards and support our students in making the best choices for their futures. Over 100 employers were involved, including the Diocese of Westminster, Brentford FC, London Borough of Hounslow, Mercedes Benz, Orange Tree Theatre and Sky!

This was a fantastic opportunity for students to get hands-on experience in the world of work and develop transferable soft skills so valuable to employers. Pictured above are Alex Godfrey-Franks and Stanley Marsh at Hounslow Urban Farm!

End of KS3 Awards Event

On Monday, we welcomed some parents/carers to our End of KS3 Awards Event, where we celebrate Year 9’s success as they come to the end of a key stage.

A variety of awards were presented – including subject honours, ties and flashes, pastoral prizes, and sporting, academic and extra-curricular trophies.

A special well done to Jonas Canniere, who won the coveted Headteacher’s Cup to commemorate a brilliant all-round contribution over the last three years. Well done to all the prize winners!

Co-Heads’ Celebration

As a school, we want to constantly celebrate individuals that excel. Today (Wednesday), the Co-Heads hosted their final Celebration Sit-Down of the school year. Students were chosen as a reward for their sustained contribution to school life throughout the year. The boys were treated to free food from the canteen and given the opportunity to give their frank views about school. It was great for the students to feel heard and recognised once again.

End of Year Celebration Assemblies

We celebrated the end of the school year with our traditional celebration assemblies. It was wonderful to be able to issue a wide range of certificates and awards for students who have performed especially well this year. Congratulations to all the winners!

In addition, students were urged to be especially careful through the summer break, especially being thoughtful about the temptation of swimming in unknown water. There were also the usual reminders ahead of the 2023-24 school year.

Head Students Elected!

The Sixth Form team have been delighted to appoint two Co-Head Students for the 2023-24 academic year Congratulations to Oliver Hone and Anya Brucal (back row, L-R)! Anya is our second female Head Student!

Anya and Oliver will be ably supported by three deputies – James Skinner, Joe Gilmour and Arthur Moore (front row, L-R). We know that they will be outstanding ambassadors next year – part of their duties will be chairing the Student Council and managing the Sixth Form Student Voice team.

Max Campling Community Award

And finally… we love hearing stories of students going above and beyond to help those less fortunate in their community. To that end, we were proud to hear about Max Campling winning a One Hounslow Community Star Award.

Max received his award due to his tireless work at the Hounslow Community FoodBox. He has volunteered there for the last 18 months, making up food parcels for individuals and families tailored to their specific dietary requirements. He has shown great enthusiasm, commitment and flexibility – especially considering he continued to volunteer while revising for, and then sitting, his GCSEs. Well done Max – you are everything an Isleworthian should aspire to be.
