STEM Education
“Absolutely fantastic, aspirational growth mindset. Absolutely unapologetic about high expectations. What an incredible school.” – parent/carer feedback
Introduction and Ethos
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Our offer focuses on hands-on learning, which is often how boys learn best. Equally, students who prefer the theoretical will be well-suited by our curriculum, where subject-specialist teachers are well-equipped to ensure students make maximum progress. Within lessons, these same expert teachers strive to drive oracy through effective questioning before students put their learning into writing; our mantra is practice makes permanent. You can find more information about the curriculum in the subject pages.
Beyond the Classroom
The extra-curricular programme gives students the change to enhance their classroom learning as well as learning new skills or developing passions. Some examples from recent years include:
- Bike Maintenance Club
- Electronics Club
- Engineering Club
- Mathematics Challenge Club, led by Year 12 further maths students mentoring younger keen mathematicians
- Medic club, for Year 12 biologists with an interest in medicine at university
- Participations in the UK Maths Trust’s Maths Challenges, at Junior, Intermediate and Senior level
- Science Problem-Solving Club
- Woodworking Club
- Year 7 Science Club
Find out more about each specific subjects’ offer on their subject page.
Rewards
Across the STEM subjects, students can receive regular rewards. For example, they can:
- Earn house points in lessons for “above and beyond” effort
- Be nominated for subject-specific cups, trophies, presentations and scholarships at our annual Junior Awards (Year 9) and Senior Awards (Years 11-13) events
- Receive specialist Academic or Progress ‘colours flashes’ and ties, to be worn with pride for a sustained contribution.
