Hounslow Poetry Slam Winners!

Poetry Slam 2026

We have been delighted to see Year 7 students embrace our ‘read, read, read’ philosophy and our physical library in school. To that end, a group of students have been taking part in a borough-wide Poetry Slam initiative. They were picked by the English team to help develop students’ writing and public speaking skills.

It started a few weeks ago with a special workshop in school, working with professional poet Deanna Rodgers (pictured talking to Riyan second above). Throughout the three-hour session, students worked in a collaborative and creative way to devise poems about topics that are a personal passion. Eight students were then chosen to participate in another workshop before representing I&S at the final competition!

This event was held at St Mark’s School, with several other local schools taking part. Students were taught about the fundamentals of poetry and then worked in groups to produce their own! It was a fantastic way for students to develop their creative writing skills as well as hone their public speaking talents. Our Year 7s worked really well together amidst fierce competition, so we were delighted when they won the whole competition - crowning them the best slam poets in Hounslow! Well done, boys - you have done your school proud.
