On Friday 12 November, six A level music students attended the Amplify event at the Abbey Road Studios. The festival welcomed ballot winners from all over the world – the next generation of artists and creatives in a bid to inspire them in their music innovations. The students attended two sessions during the two-hour event.

‘How to Build Your Career as a Music Producer or Engineer’

This was a fascinating session with an award-winning producer and engineer panel who have worked with Stormzy, Rihanna and Yebba. They discussed their different routes into the industry as well as their varied experiences. It was very useful for the students to hear the professionals sharing their personal journeys as well as insights into how you can make it in the competitive music industry.

‘Becoming an Engineer’

Students then moved to the next panel, featuring three Abbey Road Studios engineers:

  • Andrew Dudman, a film score engineer who has recorded/mixed ‘The Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Mary Poppins Returns plus the ‘Gods of War’ video game
  • Chris Bolster, who has been a sound engineer for Foo Fighters, Paul McCartney, Oasis and Take That
  • Christian Wright, who has been a mixing and mastering engineer for Ed Sheeran, Blur, Radiohead and Elvis Presley.

These three engineers have a phenomenal pedigree. Indeed, the credits listed above are just a taste of the world-famous work they have been involved in. The session gave a unique insight into the music industry, and students enjoyed the Q&A at the end.

Trip organiser Mr McKeever said afterwards: “The students enjoyed their experience and came away with a real insight into the real world and working experiences of some of the world’s top music engineers and producers.”
