It has been a stunning few days for some of our Year 11 students, just ahead of their GCSE examinations, which started last week.
Gymnastics – Team GB
Firstly, we heard the news that former Three Bridges Primary School student, James Skinner (11Tr), had gained selection for Great Britain’s Junior Mixed Gymnastics Team to compete in Luxembourg in the TeamGym European Championships next term. James is a prolific sportsman in school, with students and staff used to seeing him on the football or rugby pitches and on the athletics track. However, outside of school he has been a member of Heathrow Gymnastics Club for many years. The TeamGym competition will see James competing on the floor, as well as tumbling and vaulting.
Mathematics – National Acclaim!
Mikaeel Shah (11Br), also a keen sportsman and former Marlborough Primary School pupil, has gained more recognition for being one of the very best young mathematicians in the country. Earlier this year he entered the Intermediate Mathematics Challenge, an annual competition, run by the UK Mathematics Trust. Following his success, he was invited, along with 600 other youngsters, to take the 2-hour Maclaurin Mathematical Olympiad. During the Olympiad, Mikaeel produced written solutions to six complex problems. Mikaeel gained a distinction (50 marks out of 60), winning a book and a gold medal. Impressively, this places him in the top 20 students in the country.
Wrestling – National Champion
Finally, we heard that AbdurRahman Beg (11Tu) became a Great Britain wrestling champion on Saturday 14 May. The former Springwell Junior School pupil has been wrestling for about four years. He trains up to five times a week at the Prizefighters club in Aldershot. At first, he simply went along to have a go at a new sport. He has now gone from strength to strength, competing at U17 level in the under-92kg category. In the national championships near Manchester, he progressed through the first three rounds with relative ease – before taking the gold medal on points after a close-fought final!
Congratulations to all three boys and the best of luck with the examinations!
