We were delighted to hear that Isleworth & Syon placed sixteenth in the whole country after Round 1 of the Debate Mate Urban Debate League. Our students were also the twelfth best school in London.
The Urban Debate League is split into two rounds. Isleworth & Syon hosted one of 31 competitions which made up the first round on Tuesday 20th January, and we welcomed students from Feltham Community College, Heston School, Harlington School, and St Mark’s School. During this event there were two rounds of debates – one with a seen motion, the other unseen. In each round, there were six simultaneous debates going on in different classrooms, before the points were tallied up. The standard of competition was extremely high, as students passionately made their points and challenged each other. The debates were, at times, a bit fiery, but always very entertaining!
The next round of the League takes place in March. The top schools in the country upon completion of Round 2 will proceed to the House of Lords for the final. Well done to all of our students who took part in the debates, and we wish you well in the next stage of the competition.
