On Thursday 19 June 2014 the Isleworth & Syon Cricket First XI took part in the annual fixture against the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at the Old Isleworthians Cricket Ground, Wood Lane. After a fiercely competitive match, Isleworth & Syon were able to hold on for a draw after sustained pressure from the MCC.
Isleworth & Syon bowled first, with Nick Bennett and Jamie Tilt particularly impressive. Nick gained three wickets in total, while Jamie made two great catches in the field. In the second session, before lunch, Isleworth’s bowlers gained 6 wickets for only 20 runs in a fantastic display of attacking bowling. The second session ended at 136-6.
However, after lunch, the MCC were reinvigorated, scoring another hundred runs before declaring at 235-7. Their opening batsman, S.W. Green, was particularly impressive, scoring 77 before a Jamie Tilt catch, while A Mitchell finished on 54 not out.
When Isleworth came to bat, wickets tumbled early. B. Ashaq was particularly impressive, taking four wickets and conceding only six runs in nine overs during the innings. However, Daanyaal Khan and Aman Patel came to Isleworth’s rescue, building a partnership which lasted for two hours as they attempted to wrestle control back in Isleworth’s favour. After tea, however, Isleworth collapsed, and the batsmen had to dig in deep to valiantly hold on for a draw. They finished at 78-9.
It was a match to remember during a beautiful day in Isleworth. Thanks, as always, to the MCC for their fantastic sportsmanship, and congratulations to all Isleworth & Syon players for their fantastic effort throughout.
